The Questions Single Parents Should Ask When Dating

For single parents, dating can be a complicated venture.  Some questions can help you decide if the person you are dating is right for you, and for your family.

Ask about his/her previous relationships.

You want to know if relationships he/she had in the past were successful and happy, or whether he/she has a history of turbulent relationships that ended badly.

Ask about his/her approach to conflict.

You want to know he/she is able to cope with conflict in an appropriate manner, and that he/she does not resort to unhealthy patterns of fighting, withdrawing, or blaming.

Ask about his/her views regarding children.

Whether you want more children or do not want any more, you and your prospective spouse must be compatible.  You also need to know if he/she is prepared to make a commitment to both you and your children.

Ask him/her about his viewpoint on household responsibilities.

You need to know he/she shares your opinions regarding child-care tasks and chores in the home.

Ask his/her viewpoint on marital troubles.

Your prospective spouse may think a quick divorce is the best solution, or he/she may believe in working through problems.  He/she may think couples should resolve their own difficulties, or agree that counseling is an option.

Make sure your beliefs and values are compatible.

Having the same values is an important part of a successful relationship.  Values can cover everything from avoiding infidelity to methods of child-raising.

Ask about his/her plans for the future.

Does he/she have specific goals for himself, family, career, and other aspects of his life?  A mature person is not only thinking about today.  While he/she may not have hi/her entire life planned, he/she should be able to tell you what he wants to do with his/her life.

These are some of the topics to address when you are thinking about including a new person in your life and in your family.  The more you know about him/her before you make a commitment, the better your chances will be of a happy future.

Sleep Training: A Look at Both Sides of the Argument

Caring for a newborn can be exhausting. Tired parents often struggle to find ways to get their newborns to sleep through the night. There is fierce debate over whether you should sleep train your baby or let him learn to sleep on his own.

The Ferber Sleep Training Methods

With this method, parents allow the baby (always three months or older) to “cry it out,” and only provide comfort to the crying baby throughout the night. This method instructs parents to respond to the baby in increasing intervals—first after 5 minutes of crying, then after 10 minutes and so on. Ultimately the baby will simply fall asleep from exhaustion. Some psychologists disagree with this method because they believe that allowing the baby to cry teaches him that he cannot trust that his parents will meet his needs. They also believe that an interruption in this training—an ill baby, an unexpected overnight trip—can mean having to start the process again, further frustrating the baby.

Sleep Training Your Baby

Some parents swear by sleep training, arguing that allowing the baby to cry it out gives them the skills they need to self-soothe and get to sleep on their own. These parents often find that after just a few nights, the baby will stop crying through the night and simply fall asleep on his own. The method, which includes lengthening the intervals at which you attend to the baby, allows the baby to get used to sleeping without being comforted. Sleep training often works best with babies who are independent and content with being alone. Babies that need constant reassurance and physical touch may find this method challenging.

Most parents are either firmly on one side or the other. The method you choose depends on your philosophy and your level of comfort. Some parents are comfortable letting their babies cry it out, while for some it is unbearable.

While the jury is still out about which method is best, the most important thing is that you do what is best for your family. Follow us at Successful Parenting Today for more helpful parenting articles.

Why Teen Girls Should Avoid Drinking Soda

Young people like soda, but it is not the best beverage for teens and preteens.  If you have a teenage daughter, there are reasons to encourage her to make healthier choices.

Drinking Soda May Cause Early Puberty in Girls

Girls in their preteen and early teenage years risk entering puberty sooner than girls who do not drink these carbonated beverages.  One study has shown that girls who drink soda on a daily basis experienced their initial menstrual periods 2.7 months before girls who drink less soda or none at all.

While thirteen years of age is the average age for first periods in girls who do not drink carbonated beverages, the age is only 12.8 years in girls who consume it regularly.

Early Puberty May Lead to Adolescent Depression

There can be complications to early puberty.  Early puberty is one risk factor in developing breast cancer during the adult years.  Early menstrual periods also increase the risk of adolescent depression.

Early Puberty May Lead to Girls Being Sexually Active at an Earlier Age

Early puberty may also increase a girl’s chance of becoming sexually active at an early age.  It can make a girl feel different from her peers when she has started having periods before her friends.  While the sugar in standard sodas affect her body’s blood sugar levels, diet soda can actually increase the risk of weight gain.

Whether your daughter is a young teen or has not yet reached her teenage years, it is never too soon to discourage her from drinking soda.  You can explain the health complications associated with teens and soda, and provide healthier beverages for her to drink.

You do not need to have soda in your home, or provide it when your daughter has guests.  You can stress the importance of drinking fruit juice, milk, and fresh water instead.  If you start a “no soda” policy at home, your girl will begin to enjoy beverages that are actually good for her. She may not miss soda when you offer her a wide range of healthier options, however replacing soda with healthy beverages will benefit your daughter’s health.  Frequent soda consumption is a habit your child does not need.
